Andrew Lloyd Webber is returning to the reality television world to find Jesus. The composer has announced his latest reality casting show Superstar, which will cast the male lead in a British arena tour of his 1971 rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar, scheduled to open at the O2 in London. Superstar will air on ITV.
Superstar will be Lloyd Webber’s fifth reality casting show to date. He has previously found stars for West End productions of The Sound of Music, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Oliver! and The Wizard of Oz. Lloyd Webber will again serve as a judge on the new show, as he has on all the others.
“Presenting a new, 2012 version of Jesus Christ Superstar for arenas is truly exciting,” Lloyd Webber said in a statement. “Some of the best performances of this show have been in rock venues and I’m thrilled to see the show return to its roots.”
No official air date for the reality show has been announced, but auditions will take place across the U.K. during February and March of 2012. The Broadway revival of Jesus Christ Superstar begins previews on March 1 at the Neil Simon Theatre, starring Paul Nolan as Jesus.
