As the sun sets on another week in Broadway-land, it’s hard to believe how much we’ve learned in only seven days. Kristin Chenoweth has a serious reality TV problem? Nick Jonas is the co-captain of a team called The Wickets? Read on below for the scoop on these gems, and many more.
Sutton Foster and Gavin Creel Will Make Stage Magic Again
Thoroughly Modern Millie fans, rejoice! “We will work together again," Gavin Creel told Broadway.com, when asked about former co-star Sutton Foster. His dream project? Me and My Girl. “I want to do something [like that] where we can both sing and dance,” he said. “That’s my dream, too!” echoed Foster. “Gavin is my favorite leading man. I’d love, love, love to work with him again!” What do we say to a Foster and Creel reunion at upcoming anniversary concert of Thoroughly Modern Millie (which Creel mentioned in his Show People interview?). Gimme Gimme, of course!
How to Succeed Company Man Nick Jonas is Hoping for Strikes
Newly minted How to Succeed star Nick Jonas isn’t leaving his leading man duties at the stage door. In addition to his Broadway schedule, he’s taking on extracurricular activities. “Tonight is bowling night in the Broadway league,” Jonas said in a recent interview. “And I’m the co-captain of the team, so wish us luck. I think The Wickets is our team name.” Good luck, Nick! Really, isn’t bowling kind of what the Brotherhood of Man is all about?
Albus Dumbledore Eats at McDonald's
Ever since Jim Dale recorded the audiobook versions of the entire Harry Potter series (which required doing more than 230 total voices!), young fans have been recognizing him in the strangest places. “I ordered a coffee in McDonald’s once,” The Road to Mecca star said. “And some kid recognized the voice and said, ‘Can you order me a hamburger like Dumbledore?’ So I did!” Next time you're there Jim, would you mind picking us up a number five with butterbeer?
Lord Lloyd Webber is "Tacky," Says Tim Rice
They’ve collaborated on legendary musicals like Evita and Jesus Christ Superstar, but that doesn’t mean lyricist Tim Rice and composer Andrew Lloyd Webber always see eye to eye. Especially not about Lloyd Webber's latest reality casting show, this time for Superstar. "I think it would be ill-advised to have people voting for who should be Jesus," Rice said. "It sounds tacky and I really don’t think Andrew should do it." (Cue music: "I Don't Know How To Love Him")
The Book of Mormon Stars Are Staying in Uganda
Even with lucrative TV deals on their plates, The Book of Mormon leads Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells have signed on for another year as mismatched Mormon missionaries sent to Africa in the Tony-winning musical. Tony winner Nikki M. James and co-stars Rory O’Malley and Michael Potts have also renewed their contracts with the record-breaking Broadway hit. Doesn’t look like this group has any reason to shout “Hasa Diga Eebowai” any time soon.
First Comes Tony, Then Comes Oscar
Not to brag or anything, but when the Oscar nominations came out on January 22, Broadway had a lot to be proud of. Tony winners Viola Davis, Glenn Close, Christopher Plummer and Janet McTeer all got nods from the Academy, as did stage and screen great Meryl Streep. If it were one Tony winner, we'd call it coincidence. This many, and we’re thinking their stage roots had a little something to do with it.
There's a Cartwheeling Psychic Headed for Broadway
You heard it here first! Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who will play psychic Oda Mae Brown in Ghost on Broadway, is going to spice up the role with some acrobatics. “Quote me on this: I will do a cartwheel in one show,” Randolph told Broadway.com. “What if I do a cartwheel and then I’m like, ‘Molly, you’re in danger, girl.’ Wouldn’t that be great?” Not only would it be great, Da'Vine, it would be out of this world.
Broadway Will Always Bow to Barbara Cook
Who but Broadway legend Barbara Cook could get Laura Osnes, Rebecca Luker, Kelli O’Hara, Glenn Close, Sutton Foster, Patti LuPone and Audra McDonald together for one amazing musical medley? Such was the stellar lineup when Cook received her Kennedy Center Honors in December. “[The producers] told me that every single person they asked agreed, and I was very moved,” Cook told Broadway.com this week. “I really appreciate people doing that for me.” Say it with us now, Barbara: She Loves Me!
Kristin Chenoweth Needs Her Dance Moms Fix
What made Kristin Chenoweth hang her head and say “this is not my finest moment” on Live With Kelly? Admitting her obsession with reality show Dance Moms, that’s what. “I've gotta have it,” she said, slapping her veins. Soon, she'll need even more than just seeing these hypercompetitive Pittsburgh stage moms on TV. “What is wrong with me that I want to meet them?" Chenoweth went on. "I just want to meet [dance teacher] Abby Lee and the mothers and tell the mothers to shut up.” Celebrity guest judge? Just sayin'.
Darren Criss is "Somethin'" Special in Glee's MJ Episode
He had his ‘60s moves down in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, but now Darren Criss has mastered the ‘80s without missing a beat. On the upcoming Michael Jackson episode of Glee, Criss is channeling the King of Pop and performing Jackson's hit “Wanna Be Startin’ Something.” We love the MJ moves and sequins, but most of all we're happy to see him back in a bowtie. Who else could pull off a lyric like "Ma Ma Sa, Ma Ma Coo Sa" and look good doing it? And by good, we mean bbbbbaaaaaddd.
