Encores! kicks off its 19th season with Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s Merrily We Roll Along, which examines the lives of three artists whose friendship is tested by time, events, ambition and fate. Directed by Sondheim’s “old friend” James Lapine, the production at New York City Center stars Colin Donnell as Franklin Shepard, Lin-Manuel Miranda as Charley Kringas and Celia Keenan-Bolger as Mary Flynn, plus Elizabeth Stanley as Gussie Carnegie, Betsy Wolfe as Beth Shepard and Adam Grupper as Joe Josephson. Broadway.com jumped at the chance to chat with this talented company, who dished about taking on this cult musical, working with each other and, of course, collaborating with Sondheim.
