The Broadway-bound musical Newsies, a stage adaptation of the 1992 Disney film, will get an original cast recording from Ghostlight Records. The cast will record the album March 3 through 5 in anticipation of a yet to be determined release date this spring. Newsies begins performances at Broadway’s Nederlander Theatre on March 15, with an opening night set for March 29.
The production will be directed by Jeff Calhoun and choreographed by Christopher Gattelli, with a book by four-time Tony-winner Harvey Fierstein. The recording will feature the music of eight-time Oscar winner Alan Menken (Sister Act, The Little Mermaid) and lyricist Jack Feldman, and will include new songs written for the stage adaptation, as well as the beloved songs from the film.
Newsies will star Jeremy Jordan (Jack Kelly), John Dossett (Joseph Pulitzer), Kara Lindsay (Katherine Plumber), Capathia Jenkins (Medda), Ben Fankhauser (Davey), Andrew Keenan-Bolger (Crutchie) and Lewis Grosso and Matthew Schechter (alternating in the role of Les).
Inspired by the real events of the Newsboy Strike of 1899, Newsies follows a young New York City newsboy (Jordan) who leads a group of orphans in a protest against Joseph Pulitzer, William Randolph Hearst and other powerful newspaper publishers.
