A musical stage adaptation of Woody Allen's Bullets Over Broadway is set to arrive on the Main Stem in 2013. Three-time Oscar winner Allen will pen the book for the crime comedy. The cast, additional creative team, theater and dates will be announced shortly. Bullets Over Broadway will be produced by Julian Schlossberg and Letty Aronson.
Set in 1920s New York, Bullets Over Broadway is the story of a young playwright who is coerced into casting a mobster’s untalented girlfriend in his newest project to get it produced. The 1994 movie, starring John Cusack and Broadway vets Dianne Wiest and Jennifer Tilly, was nominated for seven Academy Awards and earned a Best Actress in a Supporting Role trophy for Wiest.
Allen has written several Broadway plays, including The Floating Light Bulb, Play it Again, Sam, Don't Drink the Water, From A to Z and contributed a one-act play to Relatively Speaking earlier this season. Although Allen has never written a Broadway musical, he wrote and starred in the movie musical Everyone Says I Love You alongside Julia Roberts.
