The filmed production of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, starring Donny Osmond, is headed to movie theaters nationwide for a special sing-along event, sponsored by NCM Fathom and Omniverse Vision. The pre-recorded version of the musical, which was originally shot at London’s Pinewood Studios, will be broadcast to select theaters March 26 and April 4.
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat follows the biblical story of Jacob (Osmond) and his 12 sons. Sold into slavery by his jealous brothers, Joseph finds favour with the Egyptian noble Potiphar, but finds himself thrown in jail after rejecting the amorous advances of Potiphar’s wife. Joseph however discovers his special power to interpret dreams, and soon finds himself in front of the mighty but troubled Pharaoh. With his bad dreams interpreted, a grateful Pharaoh rewards Joseph handsomely, making him a rich and powerful man. Joseph’s brothers journey to Egypt to escape the famine in Canaan, and seek an audience with this “stranger.”
The production of which the film is based originally opened at the London Palladium in 1991 and went on to tour globally. Filmed in 1999, it also features Maria Friedman as the Narrator, Joan Collins as Mrs. Potiphar, and Sir Richard Attenborough as Jacob. The event also features an introduction and question-and-answer session with Osmond live from Salt Lake City, plus an animated opening sequence which features an 80-piece orchestra.
Osmond appeared on Broadway in Beauty and the Beast, Little Johnny Jones and Donnny & Marie: A Broadway Christmas with his famous sibling Marie. Osmond and his sister are best known for their '70s TV variety show, Donny & Marie.
