Meryl Streep is having quite the month after taking home her third Oscar (for The Iron Lady) and nabbing the juicy role of Violet Weston in the upcoming August: Osage County film. Rumors are even swirling that she may return to Central Park for this summer's revival of Into the Woods. Broadway.com joined in the Meryl frenzy and asked readers which of Streep's films should become a Broadway musical. 1. The Devil Wears Prada (2006) - 54%
Streep earned her 14th Oscar nomination for her portrayal of icy tastemaker Miranda Priestly in the hit film adaptation of Lauren Weisberger's novel. The comedy follows Andrea Sachs, a recent college grad (Anne Hathaway) who gets a higly sought after position as the co-assistant to Priestly, a powerful and demanding fashion magazine editor. The movie also featured Broadway veterans Tracie Thoms and Stanley Tucci.
2. Death Becomes Her (1992) - 12%
Streep was nominated for a Golden Globe for her (literally!) headturning work in this supernatural screwball comedy from director Robert Zemeckis. As Madeline Ashton, an aging star obsessed with maintaing her youthful looks, Streep even opened the film with the spirited disco number “I See Me.”
3. Julie and Julia (2009) - 8%
Wouldn’t you know it? Streep received another Oscar nom (number 16!) for her spot-on portrayal of iconic chef Julia Child in the film version of Julie Powell's memoir. The movie contrasts the early culinary career of Child with a young woman (played by Amy Adams) in present day New York, who attempts to cook all 524 recipes from Child’s cookbook within one year.
