The Times Square Theatre, which has been vacant for over 20 years in New York’s famous theater district, will be renovated to house a four-dimensional Broadway extravaganza, according to the New York Post. The launch of the new theatre will cost approximately $60 million. The 4D attraction will include a three-dimensional Broadway film supplemented with in-theater scents and climactic changes. The new 4D shows are scheduled to launch in the spring or summer of 2013.
Broadway 4D, the company behind the new attraction, is led by entertainment lawyer Robert Kory and Garry Goddard, who produced the 2009 Tony-winning revival of Hair. Additionally, Kory and Goddard pioneered 4D technology on Terminator 2 and Spider-Man theme park rides in Florida. Director Bryan Singer (The Usual Suspects) and Jeff Sagansky will serve as executive producers.
The Times Square Theatre is located at 217 West 42nd Street. The former broadway theater once housed shows including Strike Up the Band, Battling Butler and Private Lives. The theatre is currently owned by the New 42nd Street organization.
