Seven days have passed in the blink of a Broadway eye. We’re taking stock of the last week in the stage world, from the announcement that Gavin Creel will be ringing doorbells across the country to the way Jerry O’Connell suffers for his art. Here’s what we’ve learned in another week on the Great White Way.
Gavin Creel Believes in The Book of Mormon
Broadway fans across the country freaked out (and rightly so) when it was announced that Broadway fave Gavin Creel is hitting the road as Elder Price in The Book of Mormon national tour. Creel, who said he is a huge fan of South Park and Avenue Q, is equally thrilled about his upcoming mission. We’re sad you’re leaving New York Gavin, but just remember: you can ring our doorbell anytime.
Hugh Jackman Looks Creepy as a Convict
We’ve seen Hugh Jackman in everything from Wolverine's unique facial hair to Peter Allen's gold lamé, but it was jarring to see a photo of the Tony winner looking super disreputable on the set of Les Miserables. “Check out my convict look…but it’s changing soon,” tweeted Jackman, who stars as bread-stealing Jean Valjean in the film adaptation of the musical. Jackman’s bushy beard and buzzcut might be character appropriate, but we’re really looking forward to the “after” photo.
Lindsay Lohan Will Judge Lea Michele
Lindsay Lohan, once the butt of a Glee joke (guest star Gwyneth’s Paltrow’s character called Lohan “crazy” on a season two episode), is going to make an appearance on the show! Lohan will play herself, and she will be a judge at Nationals, where stars Lea Michele, Cory Moneith and the rest of the New Directions gang sing their hearts out. A Rachel Berry-Lindsay Lohan face-off? The diva jokes will practically write themselves.
Audra McDonald Stocks Her Dressing Room With Wee-Wee Pads
When Porgy and Bess actress NaTasha Yvette Williams took us on a behind-the-scenes tour of the Richard Rodgers Theatre, she popped in on her fabulous, many-Tony-ed leading lady Audra McDonald. The star’s adorable dog Georgia was in her dressing room, and there was a puppy-related close call for one of Broadway.com’s own. “Our sweet cameraman is standing on a puppy wee-wee pad right now,” McDonald told the camera. “It’s OK; she hasn’t wee-wee’ed, though.” Georgia, stay on our minds, not our shoes.
Nicky Silver Is Funny and He Knows It
Every cast member of Broadway-bound comedy The Lyons could keep audiences rolling in the aisles, but who is the funniest member of their team behind-the-scenes? We asked (of course) and the answer was unanimous: playwright Nicky Silver. No huge shocker, considering he’s written some seriously hilarious plays, but Silver brought the joke home when he, unprovoked, chose himself. “I am,” Silver quipped. “How do you like that?” We don’t like it, Nicky. We love it.
Jerry O’Connell Destroys His Face for Seminar
As prepster Douglas in Seminar, Jerry O’Connell is the definition of clean-cut, but as the saying goes, beauty is pain. “I’m playing someone younger than me who’s sort of a fastidious guy,” O’Connell told Broadway.com. “So I have to shave twice a day, which is brutal." Look at it this way Jerry, your wife (Rebecca Romijn) had to deal with full-body blue paint in X-Men. You’re gettin’ off easy.
Kerry Butler’s Daughter Does a Great Angela Lansbury Impression
Musical theater veteran Kerry Butler is learning a lot from co-starring in her first play The Best Man with stage titans James Earl Jones and Angela Lansbury, and she’s not the only one. Her six-year-old daughter, Segi, has been imitating Lansbury. On the PA announcement system for a pretend plane recently, Segi said “I’m Angela Lansbury and I’ll be signing autographs.” Hey, if you’re gonna pretend to be someone, it might as well be a five-time Tony winner, right?
Raven-Symoné Can’t Hide Her Love for Janet Jackson
Brand new Sister Act headliner Raven-Symoné told Broadway.com that Janet Jackson is the star who makes her freak out, and the singer’s name came up again when we chatted on opening night. “I had a little Janet moment—I love you, Janet,” Raven said of her curtain call, referencing Jackson’s infamous “wardrobe malfunction” at the 2004 Superbowl halftime show. “But I felt good in my white dress,” she continued. “I know to double-stick tape myself.” Spoken like a pro.
Sutton Foster’s Got Serious Screen Attitude
Broadway fans know that Tony winner Sutton Foster can sass up a stage but quick, so we’re stoked to see her bringing that attitude to the small screen. In an over-too-soon clip from Foster’s forthcoming TV show Bunheads, the triple-threat dished it out in her role as a dance teacher in a sleepy California town. Her sassy advice for dancer wannabes? "Attitude, my friends!" Show those ballerinas how it’s done, Sutton!
Megan Hilty Kept Wicked Fun with Fart Jokes
She’s playing a feminine icon in Smash's fictional musical Marilyn, but Megan Hilty has a less-than-ladylike sense of humor. When Hilty appeared on The Tonight Show recently, she let host Jay Leno in on her secret to keeping Wicked fun for the four and half years she played Glinda. Hilty always tried to make Elphaba laugh during “Popular.” She described one of her favorite attempts, which involved some deep squats and artful blowing into her microphone and...you can imagine the rest. Megan Hilty: sex kitten or 12-year-old boy?
