Tony Award winner Jennifer Holliday has recorded a single version of “Hold On” for the previously announced Lysistrata Jones cast album. Produced by Broadway Records, the album will be released on May 15.
Featuring music and lyrics by Lewis Flinn and a book by Tony nominee Douglas Carter Beane, Lysistrata Jones is loosely based on Aristophanes’ Lysistrata. The show centers on the Athens University basketball team, which hasn’t won a game in 30 years. When spunky transfer student Lysistrata Jones (Patti Murin) encourages the squad’s fed-up girlfriends to stop “giving it up” to their boyfriends until they win a game, the basketball squad is forced to end their losing streak, or risk seeing no action once they step foot off the court.
Holliday made her Broadway debut in Your Arms Too Short To Box With God at the age of 19. Two years later she won the 1982 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for Dreamgirls. In 1983 she was awarded the Grammy Award for Best R&B Female Performance for her rendition of "And I Am Telling You (I'm Not Going)." Her other Broadway credits include Grease and Chicago.
