Two-time Tony winner Donna Murphy will star as The Witch in the upcoming Shakespeare in the Park production of Stephen Sondheim’s fairy tale musical Into the Woods, according to the New York Times. Murphy joins the previously announced three-time Oscar nominee Adams as The Baker's Wife. The Public Theater production, directed by Timothy Sheader, will run from July 23 to August 25 at the Delacorte Theatre in Central Park.
In addition to Murphy and Adams, Into the Woods will feature the previously announced Jack Broderick (Narrator), Gideon Glick (Jack), Cooper Grodin (Rapunzel's Prince), Ivan Hernandez (Cinderella's Prince/Wolf), Tina Johnson (Granny), Josh Lamon (Steward), Jessie Mueller (Cinderella), Laura Shoop (Cinderella's Mother) and Tess Soltau (Rapunzel).
Murphy was last seen on Broadway playing Bubbie in The People in the Picture, for which she earned a Tony nomination. She won Tony Awards for the Sondheim musical Passion and the 1996 revival of The King and I. Her other Broadway credits include They’re Playing Our Song, The Mystery of Edwin Drood and Wonderful Town.
Into the Woods features scenic design by John Lee Beatty and Soutra Gilmour, costume design by Emily Rebholz, movement direction by show co-director Liam Steel, sound design by Acme Sound Partners, orchestrations by Jonathan Tunick and musical direction by Paul Gemignani.
