Rachel York will play brunette bombshell Dorothy Shaw, the best friend of Smash star Megan Hilty’s Lorelei Lee in the Encores! production of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Directed by John Rando with musical direction by Rob Berman and choreography by Randy Skinner, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes will be the final offering of the Encores! season. The musical will run from May 9 through 13 at New York City Center.
In adddition to York and Hilty, the complete cast includes the previously reported Aaron Lazar (Light in the Piazza, A Little Night Music) as Henry Spofford as well as Broadway vets Clarke Thorell (Hairspray, Titanic) as Gus Esmond, Stephen R. Buntrock (A Little Night Music, Grease) as Josephus Gage and Tony nominee Deborah Rush (Blithe Spirit, Noises Off) as Mrs. Ella Spofford.
Set in the roaring '20s, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes follows the madcap adventures of the original “dumb blonde,” Lorelei Lee (Hilty), as she sets sail for Europe with her best friend Dorothy Shaw (York). Lorelei is engaged to Gus Esmond, the Button King (Thorell) and has a flirtation with Josephus Gage, the Zipper King (Buntrock). Traveling with them are Mrs. Ella Spofford (Rush), the richest woman in Philadelphia, her son Henry (Lazar) and a ship full of colorful characters.
