Faster than you can say “bravo!" another week on Broadway is over. Here at Broadway.com that means it’s time to take stock of the last seven days, when we learned about a sexy Streetcar star’s second career plans, who Jesus and Newsies’ Jack Kelly root for during baseball season and much more. Read on below to find out what!
Aaron Tveit and Eddie Redmayne Look Hot in Any Century
Broadway fans knew Aaron Tveit and Eddie Redmayne were going to look smokin' as pals Enjolras and Marius in the upcoming Les Miz film adaptation, but now we’ve got the photo to prove it. Someone snapped a pic of the pair on set in full Les Miz costume and they are definitely pulling off the 19th century student revolutionary look—even with Tveit’s awesome tendrils. Let’s just say that we dreamed a dream, and it looked pretty much exactly like this.
Jesus and Jack Kelly Support the Yankees
What do Jesus Christ Superstar himself and Newsies strike leader Jack Kelly have in common? Turns out they’re both Yankees fans! Newsies star Jeremy Jordan and Jesus star Paul Nolan both raised their voices at the team’s home opener on April 13; Jordan belting the national anthem and Nolan singing “God Bless America.” With the King of New York and the King of Kings on their side (plus, you know, Derek Jeter), how can they lose?
Hunter Parrish Kickstarts his Prayer with Red Bull
Godspell star Hunter Parrish is wrapping up his run as Jesus in the Broadway musical, and he gave Broadway.com some helpful hints to share with those taking on the task in the future. His advice began with the inspirational: “Believe in yourself, work your butt off,” then went to the practical: “Invest in Red Bull…and prayer.” In that order, Hunter? We’re asking for a friend. (Psst, are you listening, Corbin Bleu?)
Blair Underwood Wants to Get Into Ladies Underwear
A Streetcar Named Desire star Blair Underwood, inspired by an unfortunate childhood nickname (“Blair, Blair underwear”) has a back-up career in mind. “I’m thinking I’m may do ladies underwear like Victoria’s Secret,” he joked on a recent episode of Show People. "I can’t tell you what feels right, but I know what looks good! Who better than a man to tell you what’s sexy on a woman?” Sorry, Blair. If the catcalls you’re getting at Streetcar are any indication, ladies know perfectly well what they think sexy is.
Joel Grey’s Life is Still a Cabaret
Theater legend Joel Grey won both a Tony and Oscar for playing the Emcee in Cabaret, and it seems the talented actor will never tire of saying “Wilkommen.” In honor of the film’s 40th anniversary and his own 80th brithday, Grey recently held a Cabaret-themed bash at the McKittrick Hotel. His current Anything Goes co-stars and many of Broadway’s brightest donned their best decadent Weimar-era ensembles for the occasion. Wherever you are, Joel, life is beautiful!
Andrew Keenan-Bolger Hearts Showgirls
When Newsies’ Andrew Keenan-Bolger shared some of his current obsessions with Broadway.com, he had a tough time choosing between his all-time fave films: Woody Allen’s Oscar-winng Annie Hall and the campy Elizabeth Berkley strip-fest Showgirls. “Both are such groundbreaking films for such hilariously different reasons,” Keenan-Bolger said. “While most film theorists will disagree, I believe both are two of the greatest offerings to modern filmmaking in the last 50 years.” Um, OK. A Newsie always stands up for what he believes in!
Christian Borle Still Thinks His Ex Is the Top
He’s got a full schedule playing a "ruthless" pirate in Peter and the Starcatcher, but Christian Borle made sure he didn’t miss seeing ex-wife Sutton Foster in Anything Goes before she left for her new TV gig. Like the rest of us, he was blown away. “What I will ultimately say, without getting too much into the personal part of it, is there’s a reason we got divorced, but there’s a reason we got married,” Borle said. “She’s an unbelievable woman. She’s the best.” Awww, Christian. Does Black Stache know you're a softie?
Magic/Bird's Tug Coker Has an Unusual Basketball Move
The stars of Broadway’s Magic/Bird are playing sports legends on stage, but they would never claim to have the basketball skills of their real-life counterparts. When Broadway.com caught up with them on opening night, we had to ask: Are you flunking or dunking? Kevin Daniels (Magic Johnson) went with “I plead the fifth!” and Tug Coker (Larry Bird) settled on “spelunking.” We’re no b-ball experts around here, Tug, but we’re pretty sure the NBA doesn’t allow that on the court.
Donna Murphy Will Bewitch Central Park
Musical theater fans were beside themselves when it was announced this week that two-time Tony winner Donna Murphy will play The Witch in Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Into The Woods at the Delacorte Theatre summer. Murphy, who earned one of those trophies playing the sickly Fosca in Sondheim’s Passion, has a well-earned reputation as a stage chameleon and will be sensational in the beloved part. Are you listening, children? Donna's going to show you how it's done.
Darren Criss Bows Down to Jeremy Jordan
How to Succeed alum and Glee star Darren Criss is a bona fide triple threat and fan favorite, but after seeing Newsies on Broadway, Criss has a talent-crush of his own. “Jeremy Jordan, who plays Jack Kelly, knocks it out of the park,” Criss said. “I added him to my long list of people who I wish I could sing like. I was so blown away by that guy.” Oh, good! Now you know how the rest of the world feels about you, Darren.
