Tony-winning lyricist Scott Wittman (Hairspray, Catch Me If You Can, TV’s Smash) is set to write and direct Jukebox Jackie: Snatches of Jackie Curtis, a new musical about late drag performer and “glitter rock” pioneer Jackie Curtis. The production stars Justin Vivian Bond (Kiki & Herb), Bridget Everett (At Least It’s Pink), Cole Escola (Justin Sayre Is Alive and Well…Writing) and Steel Burkhardt (Hair). Jukebox Jackie will begin previews May 24 at La MaMa’s Ellen Stewart Theatre. The production will open officially May 30.
Backed by a full rock band, Jukebox Jackie is a collage of scenes, poetry, music and dance culled from the works of Jackie Curtis, who performed as both a man and a woman throughout his career in the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s. Certain performances of Jukebox Jackie will feature special appearances by Penny Arcade, Jayne County, Cherry Vanilla and Agosto Machado, all of whom worked alongside Curtis.
Jukebox Jackie is “collaged” by Wittman and Tony Zanetta with set design by Scott Pask, lighting design by Aaron Spivey, costume design by Rita Ryack, staging by Joey Pizzi and musical direction by Lance Horne.
