Rosie O’Donnell, who was recently in talks to play Miss Hannigan in the forthcoming Broadway revival of Annie, will not take on the role, according to her Twitter page. When a fan asked O'Donnell if she would be part of the production O’Donnell responded, “Rumor—I auditioned but didn’t get it.” The upcoming revival is set to open at a Nederlander theater yet to be announced during fall of 2012. No casting has been announced.
Based on the comic strip Little Orphan Annie, Annie debuted on Broadway on April 21, 1977. The production won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score. The forthcoming production will be directed by three-time Tony winner James Lapine.
O’Donnell appeared on Broadway in Grease, Seussical, Taboo and Fiddler on the Roof. She served as the host of the Emmy Award-winning talk show The Rosie O’Donnell Show, a moderator on The View and most recently host of The Rosie Show, which aired its final episode on March 29.
