Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire was revived and reinvented on April 22, when the show’s first ever Broadway production starring a cast color opened at the Broadhurst Theatre. Broadway newcomers Blair Underwood and Nicole Ari Parker made powerful Broadway debuts as the famously brutish Stanley and the genteel Blanche, respectively, joined by Tony nominee Daphne Rubin-Vega as Stella and another Rialto first-timer, Wood Harris, as Mitch. After this talented company and director Emily Mann bowed for an enthusiastic first-night crowd, everyone headed to nearby Copacabana nightclub to celebrate.
