Atlantic Theater Company will produce world premieres by Tony winner John Guare (The House of Blue Leaves) and Melissa James Gibson (This) as well as a new offering from Bluebird playwright Simon Stephens during its 2012-2013 season. This season Atlantic returns to its home at the newly renovated Linda Gross Theater in Chelsea. Exact dates and casting for the productions have yet to be announced.
The season will begin this fall with Harper Regan, a New York premiere by Bluebird collaborators, playwright Stephens and director Gaye Taylor Upchurch. The play follows Harper Regan on the evening she decides to walk away from her husband, daughter and home. She doesn't tell anyone where she is going or if she’s ever coming back. She tosses family, history and fate straight up in the air, and it looks like she might be gone for good.
Next up is Gibson’s Atlantic Theater debut and world premiere of What Rhymes With America. Directed by Daniel Aukin (4000 Miles), the show deals with the estrangement between a father and his teenage daughter.
Atlantic’s artistic director, Neil Pepe will direct the world premiere of John Guare’s Three Kinds of Exile, which follows the true story of Eastern European artists who went into exile during the Soviet era. The play will premiere towards the end of 2012 and play into the spring of 2013.
Spring 2013 will also see Pulitzer Prize finalist Rolin Jones’ The Jammer, a play about professional roller derbies in 1950s Brooklyn. Two additional Atlantic Theater productions will also be announced in the coming weeks.
