It’s almost Tony time, and let's face it: We’re obsessed! In anticipation of the 2012 Tony nominations, which will be announced on May 1, the Broadway.com editorial staff clocked 12 of the top races. Take a look at our forecast, including frontrunners, hopefuls and a “shout out” to one performer or show we hope the Tony nominators won’t forget. Below, our cheat sheet on the race for Best Musical.
FRONTRUNNERS
Newsies
From film flop to Broadway hit, Newsies features catchy tunes, high-kicking dancing and fun for the whole family. Yes, it's true: The 1992 Razzie Award nominee for Worst Picture is now a sure bet to be a 2012 Tony nominee for Best Musical!
Once
The small indie film was opened up for the Broadway stage in an artful way that has won over critics and romantics. It’s the little show that could—and will—find itself a big-time nominee at this year’s Tonys.
IN THE MIX
Ghost
Molly, you in danger, girl. Unless nominators get caught up by all that weeping at the curtain call.
Leap of Faith
Critics didn’t shout hallelujah for this gospel-flavored musical, but audiences seem to be having a good time.
Lysistrata Jones
This smarty-pants musical didn’t catch on last fall, but it could snag a nom for its cleverness and peppy score.
Nice Work If You Can Get It
This Gershwin redo is easy-to-swallow Broadway fun and could be a safe choice for nominators.
Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark
Unlike the other “in the mix” options, the punching bag of the season (or was it last season?) is an actual hit.
BROADWAY.COM SHOUT OUT
Bonnie & Clyde
Although nicely staged with terrific performances, this folky bio-musical didn't wow us last fall. But looking back, it’s undoubtably one of the best-written musicals of the crop. Hopefully, Tony nominators will give it a shot!
