It has been one crazy week on Broadway. Six new shows have opened in the last seven days, and it’s hard to believe how much we’ve learned. It turns out that Jonathan Groff got off to a rough start with Spring Awakening, and Peter and the Starcatcher’s mermaids could really use a diet makeover. Who knew? Read on below for a look at what we’ve learned in the last week on the Great White Way.
Jonathan Groff Thought He'd Get Sacked from Spring Awakening
Jonathan Groff earned a Tony nod for his Broadway debut as Melchior in Spring Awakening, but when the show was just starting workshops, Groff was paranoid about keeping the part. “Everyone was scared,” Groff said in a recent video interview. ”I was scared I was going to get fired!” Well, you know what they say, Jonathan. It's the bitch of living.
Annie is a Sutton Foster Superfan
Newly announced Annie title star Lilla Crawford has a Broadway fantasy lunch date with the one and only Sutton Foster. Not only did Crawford name Foster as one of the Broadway stars she’d like to meet, the 11-year-old actress played Foster's Tony-winning role in a kid's version of Thoroughly Modern Millie. Wait. There's a kid's version of Millie? Bet your bottom dollar!
Matthew Broderick Wants to Be "Leonardo DiCaprio"
When Broadway.com asked the cast of prohibition-era musical Nice Work if You Can Get It what their bootlegger names would be, star Matthew Broderick was stumped until son James Wilkie saved the day. “I’d be Leonardo DiCaprio-Beard!” James chimed in, and Broderick was on board. “I’ll take that, too. I’d be Leonardo DiCaprio.” In that case Matthew, let us be the first to say we loved you in Titanic.
Topher Grace “Sucked” on That '70s Show
Lonely, I’m Not star Topher Grace is learning the theater ropes on the job as he makes his off-Broadway debut, but compared to his big break on sitcom That ‘70s Show, this is nothin'. “[I was] literally learning how to act as the camera’s rolling,” Grace told Broadway.com. “You can kind of suck, which I certainly did, and come back the next week and try to get better.” ‘Atta boy, Topher!
Elizabeth A. Davis Was Swept Away Twice by Once
For Once cast member Elizabeth A. Davis, the bittersweet musical is so much more than a Broadway job. “I saw Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová in Once with my future husband, Jordan, on our first movie date,” Davis told Broadway.com. “I couldn’t imagine that the movie and music that underscored the great romance of my life would also sway its way into my career and sweep me off my feet.” Just when we think we can't swoon anymore...
Mermaids Live on Vodka and Chocolate
It was “Meet the Mermaids” week at Peter and the Starcatcher, and star Adam Chanler-Berat went in-depth with these sea sirens in his Broadway.com vlog. It turns out the mermaid lifestyle isn’t the healthiest. During her interview, blasé mermaid Cheryl (Arnie Burton) snacked on chocolate-covered cherries and a candy bar, and when David Rossmer (in full mermaid-regalia) was asked, “What do mermaids drink?” he said, “Vodka.” OK, ladies. Just wait 30 minutes before swimming.
Michael Esper Isn’t a Sports Fan
It’s a safe bet that The Lyons star Michael Esper isn’t a big sports lover, because in his recent My Obsessions survey for Broadway.com, Esper selected R&B singer R. Kelly as his favorite athlete. His explanation? “He's got his own cruise now, the R. Kelly cruise. So, you know, get on that.” To be honest, Michael, we probably won't. But if you want to watch Trapped in the Closet, we're all yours.
Spencer Kayden Is a Dirty Granny
Don’t Dress for Dinner star Spencer Kayden spends her backstage time in a place she calls “Grandma’s Cross-Stitch Corner,” but it isn’t all sweetness and samplers. “I pick a design and I cross-stitch something probably really filthy,” Kayden said on a dressing room recent tour. We can’t tell you what they said, but a carefully placed hand got one that said “mother” past our censors. Spencer, what would your grandma think?
Dee Snider Rocks at Broadway Casting
Twisted Sister's Dee Snider sure can pick 'em! Snider invited Bebe Neuwirth to sing Lola from Damn Yankees on his album Dee Does Broadway, oblivious to the fact that she’d played the part on Broadway. “I just thought it was good casting!” Snider said when he found out. Watch your back, Bernie Telsey!
Corbin Bleu Is Obsessed With Brian d’Arcy James
Godspell star Corbin Bleu admitted a true Rialto obsession on this week's Show People, when he lit up at the mention of one name in particular: Brian d’Arcy James. “I saw his name on the [Godspell] backstage list and I was like, ‘Brian d’Arcy James is coming here? I’m obsessed!’” Bleu gushed about the Smash star and Tony nominee. Give him a call, Brian! It never hurts to be on Jesus' good side.
