The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start buzzing with texts and calls for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2012 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Spencer Kayden
Nominated for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play, Don't Dress For Dinner
"I was lying in my bed in my pajamas listening to Marc Maron’s WTF podcast, and I realized that I was more nervous about [the nominations] than I thought I would be, so I didn’t wanna watch. I just thought I would wait and check my email or look and see if my phone rang. [My phone] has been ringing, ringing, ringing! My mom is in California and she called. I was like, 'You’re up early!' She said her eyes popped open at exactly 5:30AM her time. I’m sure that my husband and my son are still asleep—they’re in L.A. right now, too, so I’ll bother them in about an hour, I think. Or maybe I’ll just text! I told myself last night if I was nominated, I would make myself go to an exercise class today, ‘cause I’ve been totally lazy. So we’ll see if I actually follow through with that! I never thought of myself as a Broadway actress. I’m not really a singer or a dancer. So [being nominated for Urinetown] was kind of a hilarious accident. But once it’s happened once, it’s hard not to want it to happen again. I’m so glad that my onstage jackassery has turned into something like this!"
