The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start buzzing with texts and calls for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2012 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Danny Burstein
Nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Musical, Follies
“What a lovely way to wake up! I have to admit I was a bit nervous when I went to bed and I tossed and turned, but I was sound asleep when at 6:30 [in Los Angeles] my phone started going off. I’m thrilled. I literally threw my arms up in the air when I looked at the list because I had no idea who else was nominated, and two of my dear friends are on there, Ron Raines and Norm Lewis, who I texted afterward. I can’t talk to my wife [Rebecca Luker] right now because she’s filming an episode of Boardwalk Empire. She’s playing a nun, but she has a cell phone under her habit, so we’re texting each other. I’ve been trying to reach out to several people. I just looked at my Facebook page and it’s swamped with messages. Last time I was nominated, there was no Facebook! When I first got a nomination, I had a friend who was president of Actors Equity named Patrick Quinn, and he said to me, 'Just enjoy every minute.' And I just enjoy every damn thing about it. Honestly, it’s not about winning at the end, it’s just about having a great time. It’s great to be invited to the party.”
