The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start buzzing with texts and calls for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2012 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Jeremy Shamos
Nominated for Best Featured Actor in a Play, Clybourne Park
“I wish I could say I was cool, like the nominees who say they slept in and their manager called. I got up at seven with my kids, who are three and almost five, and made them turn off their cartoons at 8:30 to watch the announcements. I certainly wasn't expecting [a nomination], but I was hoping for it. When we heard my name announced, we all got excited and did a group hug, and my daughter put a whoopee cushion in the middle of the hug—a little extra celebration and a little humility! Then I had to rush the kids off to school, so I’m still digesting it, but I’m totally excited for the show. This is an ensemble, so I accept the nomination in the name of all seven of us. I’m so happy for [director] Pam [MacKinnon] and Dan [Ostling], the set designer, and obviously Bruce [Norris]. It’s been a long, crazy journey for two years, and I wanted the play to have a good showing because I love doing my job every night. I’m excited to get to meet a lot of the people who got nominated. And they always get shiny famous people to be presenters, so I can meet them, too. I’m just excited to be part of the whole hoopla.”
