The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start buzzing with texts and calls for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2012 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
David Alan Grier
Nominated for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical, Porgy and Bess
"I feel so great. I woke up this morning, started watching Sports Center and had breakfast. Good news, bad news, I really just wanted to eat breakfast. Then I turned on my phone. My motto is: no text messages, go back to bed; a lot of text messages, that’s a good sign. More than anything, I feel so overwhelmed that the show got 10 nominations. I can’t imagine what’s going to happen tonight! I talked to Phillip [Boykin] on the phone. I’ve been screaming and hollering—I feel like I blew out my voice already! It just feels to me, and from the people I talked to who worked on the production, like validation. From the very beginning, this show had so much controversy. Article after article: if we even had a right to do what we were doing; should it be on Broadway; how dare they. It was crazy! I didn’t even know if we’d make it to Broadway. I didn’t know if we’d make it long enough to last to the Tonys, so it’s been an amazing ride. That’s what’s most gratifying, that this show got recognition. Critics come once or twice, but I am on that stage every night and I see what Audra [McDonald], Norm [Lewis], and Phillip [Boykin] and this company do, and I’m just amazed. It’s just been a joy!"
