The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start buzzing with texts and calls for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2012 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Da'Vine Joy Randolph
Nominated for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical, Ghost
“Absolutely it hasn’t hit me yet. I wasn’t expecting anything. I told my agent, ‘I’m going to bed because I’ve had a long day,’ and I woke up to my agent and my assistant calling and saying, ‘You need to get up!’ Then I looked at my phone and I had a bazillion text messages from people who have supported me through this amazing, surreal journey. My mom was so cute—I said, ‘I got it,’ and she said, ‘that means you’re going to be on TV! You need to make sure you wave to the camera and say, I love you Mom, and then we’re good.’ And I said, ‘Absolutely! You raised me; that’s the least I can do.’ I think it will hit me when I get the dress. It’s like a wedding, right? You say yes to the dress, and then the Tony Awards are happening. I’m most looking forward to meeting the other people who are nominated; I can’t wait to meet Audra [McDonald]. I’m excited for the [nominees] luncheon, to look pretty and celebrate the hard work and beautiful artistry everyone is bringing to the table. It’s a honor to be part of that.”
