The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start buzzing with texts and calls for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2012 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Roger Rees
Nominated for Best Director of a Play, Peter and the Starcatcher
“It feels fantastic, I won a Tony Award back in 1981 as an actor for [The Life and Adventures of] Nicholas Nickleby, so it’s a thrill to get one now as a director. I’m very pleased that this young brilliant clever director who I work with, my dear friend Alex Timbers, and I have seen this production through for the last five years. We’re really pleased that more people will be coming to the theater, thanks to the nominations, to enjoy this very, very moving and funny play written by Rick Elice. We got nine nominations for the wonderful costume design, the wonderful scene design, the wonderful sound, the lighting and also the score, by Wayne Barker and Rick Elice, is very beautiful. A couple of the actors got nominated, too. I’m very proud of all the work that everyone does. It’s a real group effort, a real piece of democratic theater. We’re really all proud for each other really. It’s very nice. It’s not about hierarchy, it’s about the group effort and group storytelling and we’re very pleased that so many people noticed that. That’s the real distinguishing thing, nine awards, means everybody, the people making the nominations realized how excellent the work was right across the board.”
