The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start buzzing with texts and calls for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2012 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Josh Young
Nominated for Best Featured Actor in a Musical, Jesus Christ Superstar
“I’m actually kind of beside myself, so forgive me. I assumed I wasn’t going to be getting [a nomination] because I assumed the nominators hadn’t seen me. So I went to sleep last night and I was intending to sleep until noon today, but my dog was pawing at my face to give her a walk, so I got up and saw the text message light on my phone blinking. Then Facebook was up on my computer and I had about a million messages and they were all congratulating me. It’s a huge surprise and I’m so grateful to the Tony committee for understanding that I was sick for a little while and rearranging their schedules to come back to see me. It was such a hard time for me while I was sick and battling that chest infection. I’ve been working my whole life to get to this point, and for your own body to kind of betray you in this way when you need it the most, it was just devastating. To not be there with my show and with this cast that is like my family in this momentous time was really, really, really, really tough for me. I was really sad about that but this kind of makes up for it! I feel like all my hard work over my entire life has been validated and that’s pretty much what it means to me.”
