The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start buzzing with texts and calls for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2012 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Rick Elice
Nominated for Best Play and Best Score, Peter and the Starcatcher
“I fled home and went to Starbucks and was walking around in the rain thinking I need to not be home so when the phone doesn't ring I won't feel too bad, then suddenly my pocket started vibrating and I thought that's either my phone or I’m having a heart attack. I am very excited. I can't say that I hadn't been thinking or hoping for a positive outcome. It’s important to me that Peter and the Starcatcher has a future, so the idea that we've been recognized in this very sumptuous way is mind-blowing. I couldn't be happier. This was never a sure thing. When we started working on this five years ago, we didn't know what it would be. The fact that we made it to Broadway is a blessing. This morning I found out I have a lot of friends. My computer is like smoking and my phone is totally stalled already. I'm very overwhelmed. I derive more pleasure from what happens to the people I love than what may happen to me. My life is already great. I'm so excited for Celia [Keenan-Bolger] and Christian [Borle], our designers and Wayne Barker, who wrote the music, is a genius and hasn't had a show on Broadway. I'm so glad it happened for him. It’s a tough sell, this play, and to be rewarded is great. It’s hard to do a show with a big crew. It’s expensive. There are a lot of reasons on paper why this should never happen, but it's very rewarding. It’s a very sweet day.”
