The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start buzzing with texts and calls for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2012 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Pam MacKinnon
Nominated for Best Director of a Play, Clybourne Park
“I feel pretty great! I decided to try and sleep in a little bit, because I didn’t want to do the live experience. It’s too crazy. But I finally got myself out of bed at 8:40 and my boyfriend was in the living room and he said, ‘Your phone is beeping a lot.’ It started to beep about 10 minutes prior to my peeking around the corner from my darkened bedroom. I’m excited for the production and excited for this company. We’re now such close friends and family, and it’s just a thrill that the ride continues. I’ve known [Clybourne Park playwright] Bruce [Norris] for more than 15 years, and my first thought was truly that it’s really exciting to be going through this together. It’s gratifying personally and individually, but that’s really not what theater is, so you think, ‘Wow, this is what we’ve done.’ It’s really exciting. I grew up in suburban Buffalo and starting around age nine my parents started taking me to Broadway shows, so there’s something sort of nostalgic and romantic about it all, because those were the first big plays that I saw. I don’t really know what the next month holds, but I’m looking forward to it! I’m looking forward to meeting a ton of people, to celebrating our work, my work, and each other’s work. To talking about Bruce’s play and this wonderful company of actors, and standing next to Mike Nichols for a photo op. That’s kind of cool!”
