The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start buzzing with texts and calls for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2012 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Tracie Bennett
Nominated for Best Performance by a Lead Actress in a Play, End of the Rainbow
“I can’t believe it! I was like, ‘Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God!’ I feel on top of the world. I’m looking out on the Hudson River and I’m living on 42nd Street and I am living the dream! The producer took a big risk on me, and it seems to have paid off. Bless him! I’ve got awards and stuff, and they are brilliant to have, but you don’t go into a job expecting anything but to put your head down and do the hard work. I felt like I won a massive thing just being on Broadway, I don’t think that’s quite sunk in. I am allowing myself to be a little bit proud today. I am sure there will be times where I will celebrate, but I’ve got to think about the work itself and we’ll celebrate later, when I have the night off. My friend from England texted [this morning] and I rolled over and had a look and it just said, ‘Thrilled for you. Crying. Congratulations. Yes! Yes! Yes! You deserve it!’ so that was brilliant. Sometimes you sing Broadway songs at college, but you never believe you’re going to get here. So to have a debut and then this, I am just happy the way things are. I feel like I’ve won something just being on Broadway. That’s plenty!”
