The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start buzzing with texts and calls for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2012 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Alex Timbers
Nominated for Best Director of a Play, Peter and the Starcatcher
“I was watching TV and I couldn’t quite figure out how to see what the nominations were. I was too late and then I got an email congratulating us and I put two and two together. I certainly wasn’t expecting to get nominated and I wasn’t expecting the show to get nine nominations. It’s really thrilling. Holy shit, first of all, this is something incredibly gratifying because five and a half years ago, Roger [Rees] and I were sitting in a conference room making decisions like Act One should take place on a ship, Act Two on an island, but when you’re making these decisions, you don’t expect the show to ever become a real show. On Facebook getting a Tony nomination is akin to having a birthday with tons of text messages and emails. It’s really wonderful. It’s been nice getting emails from people in other shows. When you think about the Broadway community that feels really special. After being nominated last year for Best Book for Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, I kind of know what the events are and this year I’ll be able to actually enjoy them. Last year I was stressed out about what is this? What happens when? Do I not know the handshake? Last year Donyale [Werle], who was a nominee [for Best Scenic Design], and I did all these things together, but we were the only nominees for our show. I think it’s going to feel so much better this year to be surrounded by Celia Keenan-Bolger and Christian Borle and Roger. I'm going to be a little teary-eyed and it's really lovely to have family around to celebrate the show together."
