It's been quite the year for Jeremy Jordan. The Newsies star just scored his first Tony nomination, and earlier this season, he headlined the short-lived musical Bonnie & Clyde. While Newsies was not surprisingly showered with Tony nominations, Jordan was also thrilled the Tony committee recognized Bonnie & Clyde, with co-star Laura Osnes picking up her first nod as well. Shortly after nominations were announced on May 1, Broadway.com caught up with Jordan to hear his thoughts on the excitement of sharing his first Tony season with his former leading lady and close friend.
“I called Laura [Osnes],” Jordan said. “She's so deserving! She is so happy. It’s nice to see both of the shows I did this year get recognized, at least to some extent. It's very gratifying to be able to open two brand new musicals in the same season. And even though one closed, to still have it remembered and have the current one recognized, it feels like we made some really wonderful contributions to musical theater this year, and I was a part of it.”
In addition to Osnes's Leading Actress in a Musical nomination, Bonnie & Clyde also received a nod for Best Score (Frank Wildhorn and Don Black). The musical opened at Broadway’s Schoenfeld Theatre on December 1 and closed after 69 total performances on December 30. Newsies received eight Tony nominations including Best Musical, Best Director and Best Score. Based on the 1992 film of the same name, Newsies opened at the Nederlander Theatre on March 29, where it will run through August 19.
