Julianne Hough is hitting the big screen as small-town girl Sherrie Christian in the highly anticipated Rock of Ages movie (in theaters June 15), and the Dancing With the Stars alum is already dreaming of starring in another film adaptation of a hit Broadway show. The actress would love to star in the upcoming film adaptation of Wicked, according to Vanity Fair, and she’s eyeing one green character in particular.
“I want to be Elphaba,” Hough said. Although Hough has never appeared on Broadway, the actress is no stranger to the movie musical scene—before playing Sherrie in Rock of Ages, she starred in the film remake of Footloose in 2011. Featuring a book by Winnie Holtzman and music by Stephen Schwartz, Wicked tells the story of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, before Dorothy dropped in. Idina Menzel originated the role of Elphaba, winning a Tony Award for her portrayal of the misunderstood witch.
Although Hough has Elphaba on her list of dream roles, the 23-year-old actress is in no hurry to don the green makeup on screen. “I mean, in my mind I’m like, I don’t want to do any musicals for a while, since they’re the only movies I’ve done,” said Hough. “I’m like, let’s wait five years and they’ll have to come out and make [Wicked] and I will definitely do that!”
