Newsies was the big winner at the 13th annual Broadway.com Audience Choice Awards, taking home four trophies including Favorite Onstage Pair for leads Jeremy Jordan and Kara Lindsay. After the ceremony, Broadway.com chatted with Jordan and Lindsay about their partnership and why their ‘goofy’ friendship works.
“She is insane—in a good way,” Jordan joked. “She’s like my crazy little sister and so we have a blast together. We literally try to goof on each other every day onstage and off. It’s wonderful. It’s a great trusting relationship. We are just big, fat goofballs.”
Lindsay, not surprisingly, returned Jordan's compliments. “It’s very easy to work with Jeremy,” she said. “I knew Jeremy prior to the show and just knowing he’s a big goofball like I am, and that we can be silly, and he accepts my quirkiness and oddness, means we can just have fun! Having that relaxation with each other offstage, I know he has my back if something goes wrong. If he makes me laugh and I forget my line, I know he’s there. He’s like a brother.”
Based on the 1992 film of the same name, Disney’s Newsies follows a young New York City newsboy (Jordan) who leads a group of orphans in a protest against Joseph Pulitzer, William Randolph Hearst and other powerful newspaper publishers. Lindsay plays Katherine Plumber, a female news reporter and Jack’s love-interest. The musical is currently playing at the Nederlander Theatre.
