Roger and Mimi were at it again as Adam Pascal and Daphne-Rubin Vega took to the Allen Room podium on May 13 to present trophies at the Broadway.com Audience Choice Awards. Introduced by host Darren Criss as "inspiring a generation of East Village heroin attics," the charming duo were clearly thrilled to be back on stage together as they riffed on their respective current gigs in Memphis and A Streetcar Named Desire, and delivered some hilariously improvised banter during a brief teleprompter malfunction. Broadway.com caught up with Pascal and Rubin-Vega during the ceremony's after party to chat about their Rent reunion.
"It felt fantastic," Pascal said. "We haven't really gotten to do anything together in quite a number of years. The opportunity to hang out with Daphne and present some awards was a blast."
So did the duo do anything to prep for their time on stage together? "I studied a little more than he did," Rubin-Vega revealed. While Pascal admitted, "I didn't do any studying and, as usual, it showed," his stage partner thought he did just find. "No! It was flying by the seat of your pants!" Rubin-Vega exclaimed.
Despite their long friendship, the evening also marked a special first. "I got to meet Daphne's son [seven-year-old Luca] who I had never met," said Pascal. "It was just a great night. Any awards show where you give people alcohol and food, they're going to be happy," he said with a laugh.
Even though the duo currently work at neighboring theaters, they have unfortunately yet to catch each other's performances. "We're on the same schedule," Rubin-Vega said, "but I've heard he's amazing."
