Broadway sweethearts and American Idol alums Diana DeGarmo and Ace Young got engaged on live TV during the May 23 season finale of American Idol. Taking the stage at the Nokia Theatre, Young began his proposal by saying, “Diana, we have conquered Broadway together,” then dropped to one knee, ring box in hand, accompanied by Idol’s dramatic “elimination” music. DeGarmo said yes, to cheers from the audience.
DeGarmo was the runner-up in the third season of American Idol, and Young placed seventh in the reality competition’s fifth season. In 2010, Young starred as Berger opposite DeGarmo as Sheila in the Broadway revival of Hair. He had previously played Kenickie in the Broadway revival of Grease; she made her Broadway debut as Penny Pingleton in Hairspray.
The Idol finale resulted in the victory of Phillip Phillips over Jessica Sanchez. Broadway vet and Idol champ Fantasia Barrino took the stage to sing a duet with Joshua Ledet, who finished the competition in third place. Click below to watch Ace Young’s sweet proposal!
