The Book of Mormon to Kick Off 2012 Tony Awards with Musical Number

Last year's big Tony winner The Book of Mormon will join the roster of Broadway musicals performing at this year's June 10 ceremony. The nine-time Tony-winning show will kick off the evening with the musical's opening number “Hello!” No word yet if original show stars Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells, who are set to play their final performances this week, will return to perform at the telecast at the Beacon Theatre.

Mormon will join previously announced musicals and plays performing at the Tony Awards including Evita, Follies, Porgy and Bess , Jesus Christ Superstar, Leap of Faith, Newsies, Nice Work If You Can Get It, Once, One Man, Two Guvnors, End of the Rainbow, Peter and the Starcatcher, Godspell, Ghost and the Royal Caribbean International's cruise ship production of Hairspray.

Featuring a score and book by Trey Parker, Matt Stone and Robert Lopez, The Book of Mormon follows two mismatched Mormon missionaries as they are sent to Uganda to spread their religion. Upon arrival they learn their training may not have quite prepared them for the many challenges they are about to face. Co-directed by Parker and Casey Nicholaw, the musical earned nine Tony Awards including Best Musical.

The Tony Awards will be hosted by Neil Patrick Harris and broadcast live on CBS.
