Five-time Tony Award winner Susan Stroman has signed on to direct and choreograph the previously announced world premiere musical adaptation of Bullets Over Broadway, the 1994 crime comedy written by Woody Allen and Douglas McGrath and directed by Allen. The show will open on Broadway in the 2013-2014 season. Additional creative team members, casting and theater will be announced shortly.
Bullets Over Broadway centers on an aspiring young playwright in 1920s New York City who is forced to cast a mobster's talentless girlfriend in his latest drama in order to get it produced. Allen will pen the stage adaptation, which will feature music of the period from the great American songbook.The 1994 movie, starring John Cusack and Broadway vets Dianne Wiest and Jennifer Tilly, was nominated for seven Academy Awards and earned a Best Supporting Actress trophy for Wiest.
Stroman is a Tony winner for her choreography of Crazy For You, Show Boat, Contact and The Producers and for her direction of The Producers. She has been nominated for Tonys for her choreography of Big, Steel Pier, The Music Man, Oklahoma! and The Scottsboro Boys and for her direction of The Music Man, Contact and The Scottsboro Boys. Other Broadway credits include Young Frankenstein, The Frogs and Thou Shalt Not.
Bullets Over Broadway will be produced by Julian Schlossberg and Allen's sister Letty Aronson.
