Sharr White's The Other Place will play Broadway's Samuel J. Friedman Theatre as part of Manhattan Theatre Club's 2012-13 season. Directed by Joe Mantello, the production will star Laurie Metcalfe, reprising her work from the show's 2011 off-Broadway run. Performances begin December 11, with opening night set for January 10, 2013. Additional casting and creative team members will be announced shortly.
The Other Place follows Juliana Smithton (Metcalfe), whose research leads to a potential breakthrough in Alzheimer treatment drugs. Just as it does, her life takes a disorienting turn. During a lecture to colleagues at an exclusive beach resort, she glimpses an enigmatic young woman in a yellow bikini amidst the crowd of business suits. One step at a time, a mystery unravels as contradictory evidence, blurred truth and fragmented memories collide in a cottage on the windswept shores of Cape Cod. MCC's production of The Other Place opened at off-Broadway's Lucille Lortel Theatre on March 28, 2011. The original production also starred Dennis Boutsikaris, Aya Cash and John Schiappa.
In addition to The Other Place, MTC has also announced the world premiere of Nell Benjamin's comedy The Explorers Club, which will play off-Broadway's New York City Center-Stage 1. Previews begin May 14, 2013, with opening night to follow on June 4. The Explorers Club is set in London in 1879 as the title club's president wants to admit a woman into the prestigious group. Casting, director and creative team for the production will be announced at a later date.
