Sigourney Weaver may star in Christopher Durang’s new play Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike at Lincoln Center Theater, according to Showbiz411.com. The site claims that after Weaver finishes shooting her upcoming USA series Political Animals, she will lead the cast of the new comedy at LCT’s Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater. Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike will begin its run on October 25 and officially open on November 12. Lincoln Center could not confirm any casting at this time.
In Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, Durang transports characters and themes from Chekhov's work to present day Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Vanya and his stepsister Sonia have lived their entire lives in their family’s farmhouse. While they cared for their ailing parents, their sister Masha has been gallivanting around the world as a successful actress and movie star, leaving Vanya and Sonia trapped and regretful. Their soothsayer/cleaning woman, Cassandra, keeps warning them about terrible things in the future, which include a sudden visit from Masha and her twenty-something boy toy Spike.
Weaver met Durang as classmates at Yale University School of Drama and has previously appeared in his plays Beyond Therapy, Das Lusitania Songspiel, Titanic and Sex and Longing. She received a Tony nod in 1985 for Hurlyburly and also appeared on Broadway in The Constant Wife. Her many off-Broadway credits include Crazy Mary, The Mercy Seat and The Guys, the latter directed by her husband, Jim Simpson. Her notable film credits include Alien, Avatar, Working Girl, Ghostbusters and Prayers For Bobby.
