Stephanie J. Block, Tony nominee Jessie Mueller, Will Chase, Andy Karl and more are set to star in the Broadway revival of Rupert Holmes’ musical comedy The Mystery of Edwin Drood, joining previously announced two-time Tony winner Chita Rivera as Mrs. Angela Prysock (The Princess Puffer). The Mystery of Edwin Drood will begin performances October 19 at Studio 54. Scott Ellis is set to direct the Roundabout Theatre Company production, with choreography by Warren Carlyle and music direction by Paul Gemignani.
In addition to Block as Miss Alice Nutting (Edwin Drood), Chase as Mr. Clive Paget (John Jasper), Mueller as Miss Janet Conover (Helena Landless) and Karl as Mr. Victor Grinstead (Neville Landless), The Mystery of Edwin Drood will star four-time Tony nominee Gregg Edelman (Wonderful Town) as Mr. Cedric Moncrieffe (Reverend Mr. Crisparkle), Tony winner Jim Norton (The Seafarer) as Mr. William Cartwright (Chairman), Betsy Wolfe (Merilly We Roll Along at Encores!) as Miss Deirdre Peregrine (Rosa Bud), Nicholas Barasch (Leap of Faith) as Master Nick Cricker (Deputy), Peter Benson (Harvey) as Mr. Philip Bax (Bazzard) and Robert Creigthon (Anything Goes) as Dr. Nick Cricker (Durdles). Based on Charles Dickens’ unfinished novel of the same name, The Mystery of Edwin Drood is a play-within-a-play. Using the world of music hall and pantomime as a backdrop, Drood follows the exploits of members of the Theatre Royale Music Hall Company as they attempt to complete the unfinished story of Edwin Drood—with some sing-along help from the audience!
The Mystery of Edwin Drood began in Central Park and moved to the Imperial Theatre, where it opened on December 2, 1985. The show went on to win five 1986 Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
