Tony winner Amanda Plummer (Agnes of God) will play Wiress in the upcoming Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire, according to EW.com. Plummer joins a cast that includes previously announced new cast members Philip Seymour Hoffman as Gamemaker Plutarch Heavensbee and Doubt actress Jena Malone as fellow tribute Johanna Mason. Directed by Francis Lawrence, the movie will begin filming in September in anticipation of a November 22, 2013, release date.
Based on the novels by Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games centers on teen heroine Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), who uses her skills as a hunter to outwit competitors in a post-apocalyptic death match. The first film in the trilogy opened to huge worldwide box office receipts earlier this year. An ally to Katniss inside the Quarter Quell, Wiress is a District 3 tribute who is considered crazy and nicknamed “Nuts” because of her constant twitching and muttering. However, it is Wiress who helps solve the puzzle of the games.
Plummer won a Tony Award for her starring role in Agnes of God and was nominated for her performances in A Taste of Honey and Pygmalion. Her other stage credits include The Glass Menagerie, A Lie of the Mind, You Can Never Tell, Killer Joe and Abundance. The daughter of Oscar winner Christopher Plummer, she appeared in the films Pulp Fiction, So I Married an Axe Murderer, The Fisher King and Needful Things.
