Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Tony-winning musical Into the Woods is back in New York at Central Park's Delacorte Theater with an all-star cast. Broadway.com asked readers which star’s Into the Woods performance they were most excited to see, and a Tony winner, an Oscar nominee and a Spring Awakening alum led the pack. Check out the results below!
Donna Murphy as The Witch- 33%
Few performers can transform themselves as easily, convincingly and completely as two-time Tony winner Donna Murphy. From her Tony-winning role in Sondheim’s Passion to her Tony-nominated tour-de-force in The People in the Picture, Murphy loses herself in a character, which is why fans are so eager to see her take on the starring role of the Witch. The character has some of the evening’s funniest scenes and most spectacular solos, all while undergoing a transformation that leaves Murphy unrecognizable.
Amy Adams as The Baker’s Wife – 30%
Fans of the film Enchanted know that Oscar nominee Amy Adams can sing, but Into the Woods marks the first time New York audiences will be able to hear her beautiful voice live. Originated by Joanna Gleason (who won a Tony for the role) in 1987, the Baker’s Wife is the voice of the reason in the small group of fairy tale characters and her number “Moment in the Woods” is a highlight of any production.
Gideon Glick as Jack – 8%
Gideon Glick won over a legion of fans in the explosive rock musical Spring Awakening. Since then, he has appeared in various plays, musicals and films. In Into the Woods, Glick plays Jack, the young boy who climbs the beanstalk, faces the giants in the sky and lives to tell the tale.
