An original cast recording of 35MM: A Musical Exhibition will be released digitally by Ghostlight Records on August 14 and available in stores on September 11. This debut album from composer Ryan Scott Oliver features cast members from the musical’s sold-out March 2012 run at Brooklyn’s Galapagos Arts Space. An album release concert is planned for mid-September, with additional details to be announced in the coming weeks.
35MM features 22 original songs performed by a cast of five rising stars, including Lindsay Mendez (Dogfight, Godspell), Betsy Wolfe (The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Everyday Rapture), Jay Armstrong Johnson (Hands on a Hardbody, Hair), Alex Brightman (Wicked) and Ben Crawford (Shrek).
Inspired by the photography of Broadway.com’s Gotta Dance! photographer Matthew Murphy, 35MM: A Musical Exhibition is a collection of “snapshot stories” that are woven together as each of Oliver's original songs is performed while the audience is immersed in stunning projections of the photography that inspired the songs. Sometimes the songs tell the stories of the photographs; other times the feeling, mood, or tone was captured; and in still others, the photographs are doorways into worlds by which a song comes to life.
The CD, produced by Dean Sharenow and Oliver, contains a beautifully designed 48-page booklet, in which Murphy's original photography is featured, along with song lyrics and photos of the cast in performance. 35MM: A Musical Exhibition features songs including “On Monday,” “The Party Goes With You,” “Leave Luanne,” “Why, Must We Tell Them Why?” “Cut You a Piece” and “The Ballad Of Sara Berry.”
