The musical adaptation of Shrek will end its West End run on February 24, 2013. Co-directed by Jason Moore and Rob Ashford, Shrek currently plays the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. The musical, featuring a score by Jeanine Tesori and book by David Lindsay-Abaire, plans to tour the U.K. after closing.
Based on William Steig’s book and the subsequent Academy Award-winning film, Shrek the Musical tells the story of a swamp-dwelling ogre who embarks on an adventure to save the beautiful Princess Fiona. Accompanied by a wise-cracking donkey, Shrek encounters a land of fairytale creatures as he battles the vertically-challenged Lord Farquaad.
The West End production of Shrek the Musical opened on June 7, 2011. The show was nominated for four Olivier Awards including Best New Musical. The Broadway production of Shrek opened in December 2008 and ran at the Broadway Theatre through January 3, 2010. The production was nominated for eight Tony Awards.
