Alexandra Socha and Martin Moran have been added to the cast of the Public Theater’s Fun Home, a new off-Broadway musical by Jeanine Tesori and Lisa Kron. The production begins performances on October 17 via the Public Lab offshoot of the Public Theater.
Based on Alison Bechdel’s graphic novel, Fun Home takes place in a funeral home and follows Alison’s quest to come to terms with her father’s life and death by painstakingly reconstructing their shared but unspoken bond.
Socha will play an incarnation of Alison, sharing the role with Beth Malone and Sydney Lucas. The cast also includes Judy Kuhn, Roberta Colindrez, Joel Perez, Griffin Birney and Noah Marlowe.
Fun Home features a score by Jeanine Tesori (Shrek, Caroline, or Change) and book and lyrics by Lisa Kron. The production will be directed by Sam Gold (Seminar) and feature scenic and costume design by David Zinn, lighting design by Ben Stanton, sound design by Kai Harada, video design by Jim Findlay and Jeff Sugg, musical direction by Andy Einhorn and choreography by David Neumann.
Socha is best known for starring in Spring Awakening, in which she replaced Lea Michele as Wendla. She has also appeared on Broadway in the 2009 revival of Brighton Beach Memoirs. Moran last appeared on Broadway in Monty Python’s Spamalot. His additional theater credits include Bells Are Ringing, Cabaret, Titanic and Big River.
