Steel Pier, John Kander and Fred Ebb's high-energy dance musical about life in 1930s Atlantic City, will have its first professional European staging at London’s Union Theatre beginning October 31. Phantom of the Opera veteran Sarah Galbraith will star as Rita Racine, a dancer who sets out to leave the dance marathon circuit amid the city's romance and deceit.
Paul Taylor-Mills will direct the production, with Richard Jones serving as choreographer. In addition to Galbraith, the musical will star Jay Rincon, Aimie Atkinson, Ian Knauer, Ian Kirton, Samuel Parker, Clare Louise Connolly, Brett Shiels, Amy Anzel, Rob Lines, Lisa-Anne Wood, Ben Beard, Louise Roberts, Natalie Douglas, Eithne Bryan, Connor Macnamara, Sheila Grant, Simon Mayhew and Rebecca Orwell.
The original production of Steel Pier opened on April 24, 1997 and was nominated for 11 Tony Awards. Scott Ellis directed a cast that included Debra Monk, Karen Ziemba, Gregory Harrison, Joel Blum, Daniel McDonald and Kristin Chenoweth (in her Broadway debut!).
