The wee posse must be going wild! Five-time Tony winner Audra McDonald married Broadway fave Will Swenson on October 6 at their home in Croton-on-Hudson, New York. "The couple looks forward to their new life together as husband, wife and 'wee posse of three,'" their spokesperson said. The "wee posse" consists of McDonald's daughter, Zoe Madeline (age 11), and Swenson's sons, Bridger (age 11) and Sawyer (age eight).
"I'm thinking of a character song from My Fair Lady," Swenson tweeted the day before the wedding, undoubtedly referring to "Get Me to the Church on Time."
McDonald is a Tony winner for Porgy and Bess, her most recent Broadway star turn, as well as her performances in Carousel, Master Class, Ragtime and A Raisin in the Sun. She also received Tony nominations for 110 in the Shade (in which Swenson also appeared) and Marie Christine. Her other Broadway credits include Henry VI, Something Wonderful and The Secret Garden. She is well known for playing Dr. Naomi Bennett for four seasons on TV's Private Practice. Her other film and TV credits include Annie, The Bedford Diaries, Wit, It Runs in the Family and Cradle Will Rock. McDonald, Julie Harris and Angela Lansbury are the only people in Tony history to win five performance awards.
Swenson is currently in rehearsal for Manhattan Theatre Club's Murder Ballad. He garnered a Tony nomination for his portrayal of Berger in Hair and was most recently seen as Tick in the Broadway production of Priscilla Queen of the Desert. He also appeared on Broadway in 110 in the Shade, Lestat and Brooklyn. His off-Broadway credits include Rock of Ages, The Slug Bearers of Kayrol Island and Adrift in Macao.
McDonald's wedding dress was designed by Esosa, the costume designer for Porgy and Bess.
Congratulations to the happy couple and their adorable brood!
