A new stage adaptation of James Jones’ classic 1951 novel From Here to Eternity is set to open at London’s Shaftesbury Theatre in fall 2013. Featuring lyrics by Tim Rice, music by Stuart Brayson and a book by Bill Oakes, the previously announced musical will be directed by Tamara Harvey. Previews will begin September 23, 2013, with an opening night scheduled for November 30, according to the Daily Mail. No casting has been announced at this time.
Set in 1941, From Here to Eternity is the story of soldiers stationed In Oahu, Hawaii in the months leading up to the Pearl Harbor attacks. Jones’ debut novel won the National Book Award for fiction in 1952 and was adapted into a 1953 film of the same name, starring Burt Lancaster, Montgomery Clift, Ernest Borgnine and Frank Sinatra. The film won eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
Rice earned Tony Awards for Aida and Evita. His additional Broadway lyricist credits include Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Jesus Christ Superstar. From Here to Eternity marks Brayson’s West End debut.
