The life of Grammy-winning artist Amy Winehouse will be the basis of a new musical, according to The New York Times. The Danish Royal Theater will produce the untitled work at the Red Room Theatre in Copenhagen in January 2013. Winehouse will be played by Johanne Louis Schmidt.
The Amy Winehouse musical will explore the public pressure put on the young singer as her problems with addiction began. The show will feature material pulled from Winehouse’s interviews, speeches, concerts, letters and songs. The musical will include songs from her albums Frank and Back to Black. The late singer’s family is not involved with the production.
The singer died in 2011 at age 27 from alcohol poisoning. She was the first British female to win five Grammys, including Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Before her death, she suffered a long battle with alcohol and drug addiction.
