Should we call it Smazh with a Z now? Legendary Broadway star Liza Minnelli will guest star—as herself—on during the upcoming second season of NBC’s musical theater dramedy, Smash.
In the episode titled “The Surprise Party,” Minnelli will pop up and sing an original song written by composing duo Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (who serve as producers on the show). The song will even be a duet with Tony winner Christian Borle, who plays songwriter Tom Levitt on the program.
Smash returns on February 5, and the show will mark Minnelli’s second buzzy TV appearance for the coming season: she’ll also reprise her role as Lucille 2 on the return of Arrested Development). Minnelli's episode will air sometime in spring 2013.
Minnelli is not the only high-profile stage vet to grace the Smash camera next season. She’ll be joined by Jennifer Hudson, Jeremy Jordan, Jesse L. Martin, Sean Hayes, Bernadette Peters, Krysta Rodriguez, Andy Mientus, Nikki Blonsky and Daphne Rubin-Vega.
